I just returned from an amazing one week stay in Ibarra, Ecuador where I was volunteering at Prótesis Imbabura. The level of need there is high but the availability of services very low, so it was a challenging, yet very rewarding, experience! I am humbled by the grace and determination of the patients there in the face of adversity, some of whom travelled over 14 hours to come to the clinic. Along with a prosthetic student there under my supervision, I was able to evaluate, fit, and deliver an Above-Knee Prosthesis to a new amputee, a new Above-Knee Prosthetic Socket for an existing patient, Bilateral (right and left) Below-Knee Prostheses to a little girl, and a Symes Prosthesis, Below-Knee Prosthesis, and new Upper-Extremity Prosthetic Harness to a young boy missing part of all four extremities (legs and arms).
I will be posting some pictures and a video here soon, or they can be seen on our Facebook page (Sunrise Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc).
Donations to Prótesis Imbabura can be made through their website, and are greatly appreciated!
